Academic Support

Students work on a lego project together.

Math Help
Uni offers regularly scheduled math help where students can work with a math
teacher and peer tutors. There are lots of reasons to visit the math help classroom:
• Help with homework in math or math-adjacent classes
• Quiet place to do homework with help nearby
• Help studying for a test
• Prep for reassessment
• Review challenging concepts
• Review returned tests to understand errors

Writing Center
The Writing Center is available to all students twice a week after school (Uni period). It is staffed by a select group of exceptionally friendly juniors and seniors who can help with any writing project at any stage in the writing process — from brainstorming initial ideas and shaping an outline to proofreading the final
draft. Peer tutors will talk with you about your goals for the project and help you find the best approach; they will not tell you what to “fix” or “correct errors” in your draft. We are happy to work with you on creative writing — whether for a class or on your own initiative — or academic writing for a class assignment.

Tutoring
One-on-one tutoring can be arranged by Uni faculty members who identify students who could benefit from additional support. A generous alumni donation allows us to offer this tutoring at no cost to Uni families. Tutors are typically University of Illinois students in a related field who go through interviews and a background check. Teachers who see a need will reach out to the student and parent(s). If the student is interested and willing to commit to the program’s attendance policies, every effort will be made to match the student to a tutor whose schedule aligns with the student’s.
