SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

google cardboard
SS1 -- A class set (24) of Google Cardboard (a virtual reality platform)
Virtual reality systems and applications are increasingly being used in secondary and post-secondary classrooms. Many systems, such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, allow for unprecedented levels of immersion in virtual spaces. However, these systems are expensive and do not allow for much virtual collaboration. On the other hand, Google cardboard headsets are relatively inexpensive and now allow students to easily collaborate with each other in the creation and exploration of a virtual space. Using a smart phone, these headsets allow students to curate virtual tours that they can then share with their peers.

In World History to 1500, the students will create tours of historic places using Google tour creator that they will then guide using Google Expeditions and Cardboard. Using a primary source as their reference point, students will act as the tour guides for their classmates as they explore a historical place in virtual reality using a cardboard headset. The student guides will gain important contextual knowledge about historic places while developing their public speaking skills and familiarizing themselves with an emerging technology. In addition, it will create an immersive experience for their classmates that facilitates peer education and engagement.

In the subfreshmen Introduction to Social Studies course, students study geography to understand the relationship between human populations and the physical world. Using Google Expeditions and Google Cardboard will allow students to experience foreign geographies – such as the Sahara Desert or the Andes Mountains – and consider how these landscapes impacted human civilization (and vice versa).
COST: $350
